Hello! Happy New Year! I’m only 33 days late. Are you surprised? I’ve had so much to say, but so little time to say it, which is probably a good thing. I am ALL FOR the sharing of our hearts and minds and think it is good + right to stand up for what we believe in. I never did get around to sharing my thoughts on the American flag, why black lives actually do matter and whether or not I think George Dubya is a drunk or just a silly old man. But this isn’t going to be one of those posts nor will it be about my chronic late problems. Thank goodness although I can’t wait to tell you how much I’ve improved!
I’m extending my break from writing naked too, at least for today. I decided that TODAY would be a good day to put some clothes on, starting with my big girl pants ’cause I just might need ’em. Why? Um, because this post might be about yer uh, o-o-opinions, and in case you don’t already know, I sometimes talk to myself so this post applies to me too.
My passion for political discussions has been relatively non-existent until recent times. I don’t know if it has to do with turning a decade older or just the craziness of the election <probably the latter. Maybe you can relate. I think it began with the women’s march. I didn’t participate. Instead, I argued about it on Facebook, with my brother. We are cool by the way. I might be slightly cooler, but that is beside the point. One week later, my heart started beating a little faster than normal. Reading all those discussions on Facebook and Twitter about the Executive Order got me thinking a LOT about where I stand, especially in comparison to others.
I noticed something different about this new discussion and it brought me to only one conclusion and so, of course, I have to share. Guys! No matter which side of the wall your opinion falls, God is still the only one who is good. It’s easy for me to think that MY view of this or that is the right one. It’s the good way. It’s easy to say this or that way is clearly the wrong way, but I have to remember what is most important. There is only one who is truly good + right. It’s neither you nor me, but God Almighty. He is in control. Do you believe it?
This doesn’t take away my passion for or against certain global issues, but it does give me peace. I can think and feel differently and yet still link arms with those who disagree because of the love and goodness of God. I still get angry. I still FEEL. I still think I know what is good + right. I am still human. But oh how thankful I am that God is the one who is all-knowing. He is the one with all the answers. He is the answer. While arguments and disagreements carry on, He is touching lives! He is mighty to save. Can I get an Amen?
I’m not suggesting to stop sharing your opinions. I respect them, especially ones well written, even if I disagree. But please PLEASE, don’t let the opinions of others trick you into believing they know nothing of God. I know, I know, I get it! I do, but let God take care of that. He knows the hearts of his people better than anyone. He knows your friends’ hearts. Yes, your FRIENDS. That’s what many of us are. We are Facebook Friends, remember?
We are living in an unsettling time, not because of all the arguing about whose lives matter most or where protection matters most or which political party matters most, but because of what actually matters most-things like grace, faith, hope and love. We need grace for each other’s views or more like each other. Can we replace thoughts toward others as “heartless, naive, illogical or uneducated” with “forgiven and loved?” We get to choose to be helpful or harmful. Let’s choose HELPful. As for faith, now is always a good time to cling to it, and hope? I will never let go of hope. Never. Ever. Now about those clothes.
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. -Colossians 3:14
The Bible says to clothe ourselves with love, which tells me it is unnatural. We have to put it on. Jesus says it binds us together in perfect harmony. I am reminded of a similar message by the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only LOVE can do that.” This means it is possible for harmony to be found between hmm, I don’t know maybe those who stand in allegiance to the flag and those who don’t, those who support Donald Trump and those who don’t, those who march for women and those who don’t, those who support the Executive Order and those who don’t. It means putting on love even when you think someone is dead wrong.
This new lens of right and wrong and bad and good is poisoning our circles. We are not enemies. I can only imagine how our real enemy revels in the disunity among people, especially those of faith. Rather than simply drawing a line in the sand and linking arms anyway, we are kicking it up into each other’s eyes and forgetting what love actually looks like. So when your heart starts to elevate because of a post or a comment and you feel the need to justify your reasoning and respond, stop and think. Will it be helpful? If not, leave it alone and be thankful. Why? Well, because that elevated heart of yours is most likely helping you to burn some calories.
If a fast-beating heart has become the norm, you might want to take a break from the News, Facebook and Twitter. Instead, put on those new clothes of yours and use ’em to inspire you to go do something good + right. There’s no better time than now.
